Postby Larkin » January 24th, 2012, 4:19 pm

Detroit Sports Nation BREAKING NEWS: Source: Prince Fielder will sign a 9-year, $200+ million dollar contract with the Detroit Tigers.

Wow....

Cabrera to DH...or move to 3rd?

Talk about your nice problems to have.

I think for this year, they'd have Miggy and Prince share 1B and DH and wait and see what happens with Martinez. Not sure if Cabrera could handle 3B well enough to overcome the extra offense.

Wow.

That's a large investment. He's a great hitter, but nine years? I hope this won't be like Juan Gonzalez. Just think of he would have taken the deal Randy Smith offered him!

Forbes agrees:

The Thing is, Miggy gave them his blessing before they offered the contract to Fielder. The article calls it a slap in the face to Miggy, but he actually knew about it all along. He's happy to move to 3rd, so that will probably mean Victor will DH when he comes back.

The one concern for sure, is that there will not be much speed on the base paths. They'll have to be careful not to hit too many ground balls with a man on first or it'll be a quick 2 outs, but hey, if they get the power hitting and the pitching, they will be ok.

I really wasn't worried about what Cabrera thought. After his shenanigans during spring training last year, I could care less. I know he's a major reason the Tigers won the Central, but I don't like him.

I just think the Tigers massively overpaid. I like Prince Fielder, I truly loved watching his dad play, but Prince doesn't strike me as being worthy of the third largest contract in baseball history.

That said, next year should be exciting. I hope they do win it because with this contract, the Tigers are going to start losing talent as other contracts expire.

I hope a spot can be found for Inge, but I know that's unlikely.

Nice article there with stories about Prince as a little kid of 12 knocking homers into the upper deck of Tiger Stadium.

Yeah I hear you about Cabrera. I cheer when he gets a hit.....but that's about it. Not much respect for his off field behavior.
